With Coronavirus restrictions slowly lifting in Victoria, it was the perfect time to book a stay out of town for a change of scenery. We had looked at the same walls of our homes for far too long and were itching to take a road trip! Introducing the first stay of our ‘Explore Victoria’ adventures – The Barnhouse in Montrose, Melbourne.
The Barnhouse in located approx 40 kilometres out of Melbourne CBD and is situated in the charming suburb of Montrose. A short drive out of the city and you feel like you have made a tree change.
The Barnhouse is perfectly positioned at the rear of Handorf’s Fine Chocolate shop, 960-962 Mount Dandenong Tourist road, Montrose. There are two choices of accomodation, the Barnhouse and the Rosemont Barnhouse.

Both the Barnhouse and the Rosemont Barnhouse are completely private, surrounded by cumquat trees, lush hedges and wrought iron fences. Each house offers your own private courtyard complete with a ready to light outdoor fire and bbq entertaining area.

Upon arrival we were greeted by Peter who gave us a tour of the accomodation. Peter owns the accomodation and Handorf’s fine chocolate shop and is one of the nicest and most helpful hosts we have ever come across. He made sure we had everything we needed and said that in the mornings we could call our coffee order through to the chocolate shop and they would bring our coffees to the door, what a treat!

An abundant breakfast hamper was provided which included bread, eggs, milk, juice, cereal, spreads and to my delight, Handorf’s chocolates! Peter has thought of everything you could need during a stay and we were pleasantly surprised to find a full bag of ice in the freezer, perfect for our gin and tonics that we got stuck into shortly after check in.

The Barnhouse is a homely two story accomodation. There are two double beds, full kitchen, dining table, two large couches and my personal favourite – two comfy armchairs positioned in front of the indoor fire. The perfect spot for cuddling up on a cold night with a belly warming glass of red.

The warm and spacious upstairs bedroom features a full size bathtub along with a seperate bathroom. It was bliss in the evening having a hot bath and listening to the rain on the tin roof as I drifted off to sleep.

The chocolate shop has the most amazing selection of chocolates. I couldn’t decide on just one so went with a mixed assortment of milk and dark. The shop is a chocolate lovers dream and the space provides a cafe and a beautiful garden area for you to walk through and explore.

We are so grateful to have spent time at the Barnhouse. Our stay was perfect for a short getaway and we left feeling incredibly rested and relaxed. We can’t thank Peter enough for his outstanding hospitality.
I would absolutely recommend a stay at The Barnhouse. It was the perfect location for us to explore the surrounding areas including Yarra Valley, Coldstream, Gembrook and Healesville. We have discovered that you don’t have to travel far to create incredible holiday memories. 😊
We look forward to our next Victorian adventure!
