For both of my childrens birthdays I like to do a ‘one on one’ activity as one of their presents. Along with the many toys and gadgets that they get, I like to also give them a gift that is an experience or an activity that we can both enjoy after the hype of their birthday has subsided.
Three years ago whilst searching for things to do I came across The Langham ‘themed’ high teas which are held in the Aria Bar at The Langham Melbourne. ‘Minions’ was the theme at the time and my then 5 turning 6 year old Son was Minion obsessed. So off we went to eat minion inspired treats, minion yellow cordial and tea out of delicate teacups. We were both immediately hooked and that is how our annual birthday high tea tradition came about. Ninja Turtles followed the year after and again, we loved every minute so it was only natural to book again for 2018.
The theme this time round was ‘The Lion Guard’ and I have to say, each year that we go continues to get better and better. Whilst adults can chose to have the themed high tea, there is also the option of the ‘Wedgewood high tea’ which I opted for. We were seated at our cosy table for two where my son was thrilled to find his Lion Guard plush toy waiting for him and I was thrilled to be offered a sparkling wine. Did I mention that this gift also turns into a gift for me?! Winning!

It wasn’t long before our high tea feast was delivered to us and my sons face lit up like Christmas. There is always such a delicious assortment of sweet and savoury items on the tiered display so I recommend going to the high tea on a fairly empty stomach!

I started off at the bottom of the tier and worked my way up. Forest mushroom and truffled parsnip cream pie was the first to get gobbled followed closely by the wagyu beef fritter with smoked chipotle aioli. I was in foodie heaven. My son went straight to cakes, back to savoury and back to cakes. Go for it little buddy, it’s your special experience so eat it in any order that you like!
He enjoyed jungle tacos, cornflake chicken strips, cupcakes and tiger and lion inspired Oreos covered in a thick chocolate coating. This was paradise for our tastebuds.

The petite cakes looked so pretty that I felt a little bit bad eating them. But on first bite of the coffee and Belgian chocolate eclair, the rest followed pretty quickly. The pink champagne macaroon complete with a Madagascar vanilla pipette was my final taste sensation. Hats off to the pastry chefs at The Langham who create these little sweet delights. They certainly know that they are doing!

The service was exceptional, the food was amazing, the sparkling went down a treat and my Son and I got to spend some lovely time bonding over one of our favourite things…..food! I can’t wait to see what the theme is for next year. I love our Mother / Son high tea tradition, and I hope it will continue for many years to come.
