As a newly single woman, I’ve had to venture into the unknown. The unknown including Netflix marathons, cooking for one (otherwise known as take away), purchasing piccolos instead of full bottles, and date night……table for 1 please.
I still like to go out, I get restless being home alone too long, especially when the weather is warm, buuuuut it’s not always possible to have someone to go out with, friends are busy with their families, single girlfriends on their own date nights, blah blah blah.
So, where does that leave you? It leaves you with date night, with ……….yourself.
Saturday night was going to be ‘get dressed up and date myself night’, but, after getting dressed up and googling a few places to go, my worst enemy turned up, and my worst enemy came in the form of my ‘overthink everything’ mind. I chickened out. I started overthinking big time, I imagined all the loved up couples, eye gazing over a charcuterie and cheese platter, sipping their perfectly paired 2012 cabernet sauvignon. I imagined the groups of friends, ordering rounds of cocktails, laughing and getting flirty and tipsy, then I imagined the potential creeps, and the public transport I had to catch, and then, well then I just plain old got the freaks and put my tracksuit pants on, ordered takeaway, opened a piccolo (or 3) and started a Netflix marathon. What.A.Wimp
Come Sunday, it was a different story, I was bored, bored rotten. I thought, bugger this, it’s DATE DAY! (day dating yourself seems less scary), so, I got dressed in my Sunday best and headed out into the city. Yay me! I had no plan, I just knew I wanted to eat some yummy food and explore.
I started operation ‘date yourself’ in Flinders Lane, one of my fave places in Melbourne. My aim is to try every single restaurant in that street, ChinChin, Codda, Cumulus, Kappo, Om Nom, Ezard, the list goes on.
The real attraction of Flinders Lane to me, are the hidden laneways, the graffiti art covered walls, the vibrant, coloured street art that resembles an outdoor art gallery.
Duckboard Place Artist Steen Jones
Wandering slowly around the laneways I felt like I was on holiday, I felt like a tourist, I could have been in any Country enjoying this beautiful art but here I was in my own incredible state of Victoria. How have I made it to 36 and not taken the time to discover these places. If it wasnt for ‘date yourself’ day I probably would not have taken the time I did to stop and truly appreciate the art, to see the amazing work that the artists have put into their pieces.
Hosier Lane -‘Formula One’ Artist Julian Clavijo
Hosier Lane and AC/DC lane are two of the more well known lanes, but Duckboard Place and Beaney Lane were two impressive gems I discovered on my date.

Beaney Lane – Artist Heesco

I was starting to enjoy this date, I was taking my own sweet time, I had no where I had to be and nothing I had to do. I was beginning to feel less like a lone loser and more like a liberated grown up in charge of my own destiny. But this travellng soul sister was becoming a hungry one, she had one thing on her mind, it was ‘date day’ afterall, and that one thing she was thinking about was……big juicy balls……….
